All-American, U.S. Olympian, NBA All-Star, Businessman, and Global Goodwill Ambassador. The native Panamanian, Rolando •Ro• Blackman has completed his on-court leadership, professionalism and sportsmanship as a player and coach to become a global goodwill ambassador and business leader. Blackman was a two-time All-American at Kansas State, a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Men's Basketball Team, and a four-time NBA All-Star. He finished his 13-year NBA career as one of the game's all-time best offensive and defensive performers. His passion for the sport that he learned on Brooklyn's famed Ditmas Park- renamed Rolando Blackman Park in 1987 - extends well beyond his playing days and to success as a coach, broadcaster, and businessman.
Today, Rolando is focused on the development of the Rolando Blackman Education, Athletic, and Cultural Development Foundation that will advance programming initiatives to foster STEM education, athletic preparedness, and multi-cultural awareness.
Blackman served as an Assistant Coach, including for two NBA All-Star Games, and the Director of Basketball Development for the NBA's Dallas Mavericks, the team that selected him ninth overall in the 1981 NBA Draft. Upon his retirement In 1994, he owned more than 50 regular-season. playoff and rookie individual and team records.
Blackman was traded to the New York Knicks, playing two seasons under legendary coach Pat Riley before concluding his NBA career with 17,623 points, 3,278 rebounds and 2,981 assists. For two seasons, he took his skills to the Europeah stage, competing with AEK Athens BC in the Greek League and the Italian League's Olympia Milano gaining two All-Star team appearances and also winning both the Italian League Championship and the Italian Cup.
Blackman serves as a Goodwill Global Ambassador to the Office of Drugs and Crime for the United Nations, Global Goodwill Ambassador for the NBA Generations for Peace, and also the NBA Cares programs and participated In the NBA Basketball Without Borders initiative to Africa. His mission trips to Senegal, Cape Verde, Abidjan, Bouake and Cote d'Ivoire were directed at preventing human trafficking and child soldiering. He has worked with the U.S. Department of State's SportsUnited, an international sports programming Initiative, in five cities in Lebanon.
